Course purpose
This Specialist course introduces asset recovery as a governed lifecycle rather than a single tracing or confiscation event. It explains how suspected proceeds, instrumentalities and substitute or equivalent-value property may be identified, traced, preserved, managed, adjudicated, realized and returned through criminal, non-conviction-based, civil, insolvency, regulatory or administrative routes where the applicable law permits. Learners connect financial investigation with legal strategy, asset management, international cooperation, victim and third-party rights, and transparent disposition. The course is educational and comparative: terminology, powers, standards of proof, limitation periods, privilege, recognition, confiscation, compensation and return rules differ by jurisdiction and must be confirmed by authorized counsel and competent authorities. An allegation, red flag, restraint order or located asset is not proof of criminal ownership or a guarantee of recovery.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
1. Explain the asset-recovery lifecycle, core terminology, lawful routes and the distinct decisions made at each stage.
2. Build an evidence-led asset profile and support proportionate preservation and management planning while protecting rights.
3. Distinguish tracing, restraint, confiscation, realization, compensation and return and report their values without duplication.
Prepare a coordinated domestic or international recovery plan with clear authority, evidence, review and accountability controls.
