Course purpose
This advanced course provides a practical risk-assessment method for financial investigations. It distinguishes the risk of suspected misconduct from risks created or encountered by the investigation itself; establishes decision criteria; develops a dynamic risk register; and connects assessed risk to sequencing, resources, safeguards, escalation and review. Learners practise making proportionate choices when evidence is incomplete, time is limited and legal, operational, human and reputational consequences compete.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
1. Define the objectives, context, stakeholders, authority and risk criteria for a financial investigation.
2. Identify and structure case, evidence, asset, legal, privacy, safety, operational, independence and reporting risks.
3. Analyse likelihood, consequence, velocity, control strength and confidence without creating false precision.
4. Select proportionate treatments, priorities, resources, contingencies and escalation thresholds for material risks.
5. Maintain a dynamic risk register and decision log through monitoring, review, assurance and closure.
